About Racine Chorus

Our History

We are an organization of female singers, who meet regularly to practice, perform, socialize, and have fun. We currently have approximately 20 singers of all ages, all walks of life, and we come from southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.

Many years ago, Jewel King, our founder and mentor, decided that singing Barbershop Harmony would be fun. That was in 1948. She gathered some friends together to discuss the possibility; soon the Racine Chorus was founded. We changed our name to Opus 2000 in the 1980s. The Racine Chorus has been around for over 60 years of barbershop harmony and would love to have you join us as we sing into the future.

In 2012, The Racine Chorus decided to go back to the original name to honor our history and prepare as our chorus enters Sweet Adelines Region 3.  As populations throughout Sweet Adelines International have shifted, the boundary lines for our region will take us out of Region 22 and into Region 3.  We will treasure our friendships and experiences in Region 22, but we look forward to meeting many new friends in Region 3.

Although our "Jewel" is no longer with us, we honor her memory with an annual "JEWEL PARTY" to celebrate her and the chorus. It is a fun evening - Jewel enjoyed having fun while singing - that is what it is all about.

The Racine Chorus has won many honors for their performances. The chorus was the first to win an International Chorus Competition—in 1973. We continue to compete at our yearly Regional Competitions, scoring at a consistently high level. Competition is one way to keep the chorus at a high performance level.

The chorus holds an annual show and a cabaret. We have sung throughout the southeast Wisconsin area and have a great reputation in and around the Racine-Milwaukee area. We perform as often as we can—that is what we are all about—ENTERTAINING!

We are a member of the Sweet Adeline International, a non-profit organization of approximately 30,000 members in choruses and quartets, worldwide. The Headquarters is in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

In simple terms, Sweet Adelines Leading Lady of the Year.  The S.A.L.L.Y. award is presented to a member who makes significant contributions to the chorus throughout the year.
