Jarmela Speta - Director

Our director, Jarmela Speta, has been with us for many years. Jarmela graduated from DePaul University with a degree in Music Education with accompanying piano and voice majors. She commutes weekly from Palatine, Illinois, where she lives and works as a voice instructor.

Jarmela led us to the Sweet Adelines inaugural International
Chorus Championship iQueensn 1973. She is a two time "Queen of Harmony" International Quartet Champion (Nota Belles, 1955; Rarities, 1970 (Rarities photo right).

Jarmela, as a member of the 1955 International Champion The Nota-Belles, became the first of only six Sweet Adelines to win gold medals as both a chorus director and a quartet member. Within Sweet Adelines, Jarmela has reached the highest levels of achievement in the arranging (International Quartet music arranger, IMAP coordinator), judging (certified sound and expression judge) and faculty areas.

Jarmela was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2001 International Competition in Portland, Oregon.
